Mission statement
Curious Health Limited recognises that the environment is important to our organisation, our staff and our clients. Of particular significance is the climate and ecological emergency. We recognise the wide-ranging effects of climate and ecological breakdown and will work hard to ensure that consideration of these effects is embedded both in the way we run our business and in the services we provide.
We also recognise our responsibility to manage our operational environmental impacts carefully, including meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our organisation strategy and operating methods, with regular review points. We will encourage staff, clients and other stakeholders to do the same.
Objectives, targets and priority actions
1. Measure and reduce our carbon footprint
- We will measure and report the carbon footprint of our business on an annual basis.
- We will focus action on the biggest sources of emissions in the business over which we have the most control – emissions from our purchased goods and services and staff travel.
Our carbon reduction targets
We have committed to align our carbon reduction targets with the requirements of the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) and will seek SBTI validation of our targets.
The targets are:
- Near-term (2030) – to maintain our Scope 1 & 2 emissions at zero and to measure and reduce our Scope 3 emissions from a 2024/25 base year.
- Long-term (2050) – to achieve Net Zero, defined as a 90% absolute reduction in emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 from our 2024/25 base year, with the residual emissions offset.
Given the fundamentally low-carbon nature of our business model (largely remote working, no premises or vehicles, limited business travel), our plans for significant growth in the business and our limited control over the biggest category of Scope 3 emissions (purchased goods & services), we recognise that the Net Zero target represents a very significant challenge.
By consistently applying strong environmental principles to our purchasing, engaging key suppliers on carbon reduction, assuming significant decarbonisation within our supply chains and across the wider economy and by working hard to eliminate emissions in other Scope 3 categories, we estimate that a 50% reduction in emissions should be achievable by 2050 even with our planned growth. We recognise our reliance on far deeper decarbonisation of the wider economy in order to achieve our Net Zero target.
We will keep our targets under annual review, bringing forward our ambition if this becomes feasible.
2. Reduce energy use
- We will ensure all equipment and lighting is turned off when not in use.
- We will engage our landlords/co-working space managers on the environmental impacts of our working arrangements.
- We will encourage and facilitate energy saving in the home offices of our staff.
3. Reduce emissions from business travel
- We will embed our principled approach to travel in an adopted policy, to ensure consistency in decision-making.
- We will facilitate access to low carbon vehicles for our staff.
4. Engage key stakeholders on sustainability issues
- We will engage with our partners and clients to ensure that we work with companies with effective environmental and carbon management strategies in place.
- We will consider social and environmental impacts of clients, products, and services in our project selection process.
- We will engage our partners and clients on low carbon design and marketing practices.
5. Further embed environmental considerations into our business model
- We will adopt an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy to ensure consistent application of environmental principles in our purchasing of goods and services.
- We will adopt a Data Retention Policy to ensure that the data held by the company is rationalised on a regular basis, thereby avoiding unnecessary carbon emissions from cloud storage.
- We will integrate environmental considerations into our Use of AI policy.
Governance and engagement
We have developed a detailed action plan to ensure delivery of the objectives and targets above. Responsibility for each action within that action plan has been assigned to an appropriate person. Timescales for delivering each action have also been assigned and these will be kept under review.
We are committed to reviewing and updating progress against our action plan on a quarterly basis.
All staff will be made aware of our environmental objectives, targets and actions, as well as any related policies or procedures. This will be done via our monthly company meetings. We will also seek to routinely identify any training needed to facilitate delivery of this policy and to meet them wherever this is feasible.
Our Environmental Management System
This environmental policy and our environmental action plan, alongside any other related policies, procedures and monitoring comprise our Environmental Management System (EMS). Our EMS is certified by Green Small Business. Our certification is maintained through an annual review of our action plan carried out independently by Green Small Business.
We will update this policy at least annually in consultation with staff and other stakeholders where necessary.
